The Bubble Gum Man is the story
of Hugo Bates, a kind man who does one thing extremely well:
He makes people feel that they have value. Hugo has been
walking up to people for 40 years, giving them a piece of
bubble gum and reminding them that the world is a better
place for them being here. People believe him. And, because
of that, people feel better about themselves. Hugo is especially
supportive of young people. He helps out around the school
in all kinds of ways -- everything from the high school
band to helping children out of the cars in the morning
at the elementary school. Hugo reminds people that life
is good and, because of that, he has helped to make his
town of Athens, Alabama, a better place.
